Book Reviews

‘The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.’ Alan Bennett

“Many a book is like a key to unknown chambers within the castle of one’s own self.” ― Franz Kafka

My favourite reads in 2014

After some reflection, these are my favourite reads in 2014.
If I wrote a review of the book, I've added a link to that review. Unfortunately I didn't manage to write a review of many of them. They were all five star reads for me on goodreads, all books that really stood out for me, that I thoroughly enjoyed, was moved by, gripped by, and I would certainly recommend them.
Have you read any of these? Will you be adding any to your wishlist?

Happy New Year!

All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque

All the Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr

The Engagements - J. Courtney Sullivan

My review

Still Missing - Beth Gutcheon

The Cuckoo's Calling - Robert Galbraith

Black Swan Green - David Mitchell

The Easter Parade - Richard Yates

11.22.63 - Stephen King

The Mesmerist - Barbara Ewing

Gillespie and I - Jane Harris

American Wife - Curtis Sittenfeld

84 Charing Cross Road - Helene Hanff

Perfect - Rachel Joyce

  4. I haven't read any of these with the exception of 84 Charing Cross Roads which is one of my absolute favorites. I can't even count the number of times I've reread it. There's a few that are on my wishlist but more that I haven't heard of but it definitely sounds like I need to fix that! Great list!

  5. A wonderful list of books, and I hope that next year will bring you as many great books. The ones I've read I loved too, so I'll be keeping the ones that I have unread - The Mesmerist and Gillespie & I - in mind for the TBR dare.

  9. Lovely selection, Lindsay.I read All Quiet this year and it's a great book. I think it'll make my end-of-year list too (whenever I get a chance to put it together). The Easter Parade is another favourite and I'm thinking of rereading it next year. The Hanff is on my wishlist, one to consider for the future.

Happy New Year and wishing you all the best for 2015. x

  15. The only one of these that I've read is Black Swan Green, which I loved. The Easter Parade has been on my wishlist for a while - I really should try it some time soon. American Wife and Cuckoos Calling will probably get to the top of my TBR pile sometime soon too. Hope I enjoy them as much as you did. Have a fantastic 2015!
