Book Reviews

‘The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.’ Alan Bennett

“Many a book is like a key to unknown chambers within the castle of one’s own self.” ― Franz Kafka

My favourite reads in 2014

After some reflection, these are my favourite reads in 2014.
If I wrote a review of the book, I've added a link to that review. Unfortunately I didn't manage to write a review of many of them. They were all five star reads for me on goodreads, all books that really stood out for me, that I thoroughly enjoyed, was moved by, gripped by, and I would certainly recommend them.
Have you read any of these? Will you be adding any to your wishlist?

Happy New Year!

All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque

All the Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr

The Engagements - J. Courtney Sullivan

My review

Still Missing - Beth Gutcheon

The Cuckoo's Calling - Robert Galbraith

Black Swan Green - David Mitchell

The Easter Parade - Richard Yates

11.22.63 - Stephen King

The Mesmerist - Barbara Ewing

Gillespie and I - Jane Harris

American Wife - Curtis Sittenfeld

84 Charing Cross Road - Helene Hanff

Perfect - Rachel Joyce

  1. Perfect, 84 Charing Cross Road, and All Quiet are all wonderful books so I'm pleased to see you enjoyed them too! I've added The People in the Photo and All the Light We Cannot See to my wish list as I've heard so much about them lately. Great list and Happy New Year! x

  2. A very interesting list Lindsay, I've read 2 and have 4 to read with a couple on my wishlist. Wishing you many more enjoyable reads in 2015. Happy New Year, Karen x

  3. I've read two of these as well xx

  4. I haven't read any of these with the exception of 84 Charing Cross Roads which is one of my absolute favorites. I can't even count the number of times I've reread it. There's a few that are on my wishlist but more that I haven't heard of but it definitely sounds like I need to fix that! Great list!

  5. A wonderful list of books, and I hope that next year will bring you as many great books. The ones I've read I loved too, so I'll be keeping the ones that I have unread - The Mesmerist and Gillespie & I - in mind for the TBR dare.

  6. What an interesting list! The only one I've read is Gillespie and I, which I loved, but I'm interested in reading most of the others. Happy New Year!

  7. Happy new year to you, Lindsay, and thanks for such an interesting list. I've only read the Remarque and Hanff, but I've read other Sittenfeld and Sullivan and enjoyed them. Best wishes in the new year.

  8. I really want to read that Richard Yates book - I've only read Revolutionary Road, but it made me hungry for more. Have an excellent and Happy New Year!

  9. Lovely selection, Lindsay.I read All Quiet this year and it's a great book. I think it'll make my end-of-year list too (whenever I get a chance to put it together). The Easter Parade is another favourite and I'm thinking of rereading it next year. The Hanff is on my wishlist, one to consider for the future.

Happy New Year and wishing you all the best for 2015. x

  10. The list looks great and I want to read many of these myself. I am actually going to try to get to All Quite on the Western Front in 2015.

Have a Happy New Year Lindsay!

  11. The Easter Parade and 84 Charring Cross Road are both all-time favorites. Just downloaded All the Light We Cannot See from the library. Happy New Year!

  12. Great list! Try David Mitchell's Bone Clocks if you get the chance - an excellent read. Keera xx

  13. A brilliant choice! Wishing you a very Happy and Peaceful New Year!

  14. I love end of the year favorite lists! It looks like you read some wonderful books this year.

All the Light We Cannot See is one I have heard such great things about. I may have to read that one. I really want to read The Cuckoo's Calling one of these days.

I hope you have a happy New Year and may you read many wonderful books in 2015.

  15. The only one of these that I've read is Black Swan Green, which I loved. The Easter Parade has been on my wishlist for a while - I really should try it some time soon. American Wife and Cuckoos Calling will probably get to the top of my TBR pile sometime soon too. Hope I enjoy them as much as you did. Have a fantastic 2015!

  16. Oh I'll read the new Courtney Sullivan if you recommend it. I loved her novel Maine. Happy New Year!

  17. Oh! A Rachel Joyce, I must add this to my wish list. Thanks for sharing, here's hoping for lots of memorable reads in 2015.
