Book Reviews

‘The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.’ Alan Bennett

“Many a book is like a key to unknown chambers within the castle of one’s own self.” ― Franz Kafka

The Classics Club Spin

This is my first time joining in with The Classics Club Spin

It's a good time for this as I am only just starting on my list of books for this challenge next week (I plan to read The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West), so to have another that I should start reading too will spur me on.

Below is my list of twenty books still to read on my Classics Club list - this is my Spin List.

The challenge of the spin is to read one of these twenty books in August/September. A number is chosen and announced by The Classics Club team, and then the goal is to read whichever book is under that number on your list, by October 1st.

  1. Ethan Frome - Edith Wharton
  2. Chess - Stefan Zweig
  3. Union Street - Pat Barker
  4. Far from the Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy
  5. All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque
  6. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall - Anne Bronte
  7. Housekeeping - Marilynne Robinson
  8. Anne of Green Gables - L. M. Montgomery
  9. A Good School - Richard Yates
  10. Undue Influence - Anita Brookner
  11. The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
  12. Journey by Moonlight - Antal Szerb
  13. Rebecca - Daphne du Maurier
  14. Frost in May - Antonia White
  15. Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont - Elizabeth Taylor
  16. The Woodlanders - Thomas Hardy
  17. Agnes Grey - Anne Bronte
  18. Cold Spring Harbor - Richard Yates
  19. Jamaica Inn - Daphne du Maurier
  20. Silas Marner - George Eliot

  1. A great list. Not a big fan of the classics as you know but I do love Rebecca. Looking forward to your reviews, who knows I may even feel inspired to read more of this genre.

  2. Wonderful list, Lindsay! I got 'Rebecca' last week :) I also got an Anita Brookner book called 'Latecomers' recently. I read the first page and totally loved it. It made me wonder why I haven't read a book by her before. Hope you enjoy reading your favourite classic. Happy reading!

  3. Wow, brilliant list Lindsay! I hope the spin is good to you, I've really enjoyed it both times so I'm really excited to see which number comes up. I'm almost hoping for 19 for your sake - Jamaica Inn is an amazing book.

  7. A great mix!! Rebecca is one of my favorites of all time, and Anne of Green Gables is delightful. I never read it as a child and now I'm so sorry I waited so long. Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont is also wonderful. Sadly, Jamaica Inn was a disappointment.
