Book Reviews

‘The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.’ Alan Bennett

The Quintessential Gemini - Guest post by author Linn B. Halton

I am pleased to welcome author Linn B. Halton to the blog today, with a guest post from an interesting character in her new novel, The Quintessential Gemini.

A cat named No. 4…

My name is No. 4, I know it sounds ridiculous. Who on earth would give someone a number as a name? Are you sitting comfortably? Well here’s the story …

I think it’s only polite that I introduce myself properly. I was the fourth of a litter of six adorable (if I do say so myself) little black and white kittens. When I first set eyes on Katherine Dale, I thought ‘sensitive lady, kind – bit quirky, but I like her’.  So we formed a bond and I was right, I chose my new home well.  Katherine always meant to give me a proper name, but before long it stuck and I have to admit it does have a ring to it.

Now everyone knows that cats have a sixth sense and dear me, I think fate was working overtime when it made our paths cross. Katherine is so lucky to have me around. She’s in a fine mess these days, she’s been made redundant and she has no idea at all where her life is going from here. The only drawback of being a cat is that you can’t talk. Well, we do talk of course, but humans aren’t advanced enough to understand our complex language.

So I have to help steer her in the right direction by dropping subtle hints. She’s moping around a lot and she needs to get on with it and sort herself out. Living her life according to her daily horoscope would work if only she would concentrate on what’s it’s actually telling her. Anyway, I’m on a mission to find her a Mr Right. None of the candidates in the past have been suitable, but I haven’t given up just yet…

The Quintessential Gemini - a fun, romantic story about Katherine Dale and the three men in her life!  Two astrologers and a cat named No. 4.  Who would have thought that this rather reserved lady would end up caught in a mystic love triangle…. if only!

For twenty-one years the main focus of Katherine Dale’s life has been her work.  Love interests and hobbies came and went; but always there for her, her only constant – other than her cat delightfully named No. 4 – was her nine to five habit.   Until she’s replaced.
Her confidence is dented and she’s angry; at life and at herself.  She’s failed to grasp the office politics that were going on around her and ignored hints of ‘changes to come’ in her horoscope forecasts. For over twenty years she has followed Mark Ainsley-Thomas, a renowned Astrologer in the UK and USA.  His daily forecasts direct the way she lives her life as a typically complex Gemini.  Mark is now an ‘A’ list celebrity and his new Agent is determined to raise his profile in America, so he has to take on James Kingman to help him run his website.
Katherine is totally confused by James’ forecasts and that’s where the fun begins!

  1. Haw, haw! Good luck, No.4. If you need back up, Rambo - feisty, fanged, two-inch hunter-killer JR is your man. He has a sure-fire way of seeing off any unsuitable contenders and his weapon is primed. He can also fit niftily through cat-flaps. Dead useful if you need an element of surprise! :) x

  2. What a fabulous story.
We don't have a pet at the moment. Our last little dog Rosie came to us when our son, and his family moved to Australia (from the UK). Rosie was an old lady by then, but we enjoyed spoiling her for the last few years of her life. We would love another pet, but spending several weeks a year in Australia is not easy if you have to leave a dog or cat behind, so no pets for us.

    1. Thanks so much for your lovely comment Barbara. Rosie sounds like she was spoiled and loved very much. Yes pets do have to be considered carefully with regards to holidays. Since we've had a dog I think she's been everywhere with us in the UK and we haven't left her yet.

    2. I know just what you mean, we bought a second-hand camper van so that Rosie could go on holiday with us - but of course, we couldn't take her to Australia. We didn't see our son for four years as we would not leave Rosie! We now have two baby granddaughters in Australia, Zoe Rose (17 months) and Lilly Grace (4 weeks), plus two grown-up grandsons – so while we have our health we are trying to get in as many visits as we can. When we can no longer afford it, we will get a rescue dog and content ourselves with watching the grandchildren growing up on Facebook! Thank goodness for the internet.

I only came back to say thank you for visiting my blog – then ended up leaving you another long comment – hope you don’t mind.

    3. We would love a camper van! It must have been hard not seeing your son though. It's lovely to hear that you get to visit over there often.
Thanks so much for coming back to comment again it's great.

  3. Cats have a wisdom beyond human comprehension, don't they? But 4 of 6 - what sort of name is that?

Well, I suppose in Star Trek we have 7 of 9, don't we? Oh, and the Beckham's named their daughter Seven - so upon reflection - I suppose four is a good name after all!

Great blog Lindsay and congrats on the book Linn! xx

  5. Actually, I think Tiggs would prefer to be called No. 4, it has a ring to it. Tiggs suited him as a kitten, but now he's all grown up ... thanks all for dropping by, I love fun posts!
