‘The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.’ Alan Bennett

“Many a book is like a key to unknown chambers within the castle of one’s own self.” ― Franz Kafka

The Midwife's Confession - Diane Chamberlain

I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling emotional journey of a read. Set mainly in North Carolina, USA, several lives are changed forever as huge, long-buried secrets slowly come to light after the suicide of midwife Noelle leaves her friends shocked and bewildered, and on a mission to search through her papers and try and find out the cause of her ending her life. Noelle, who was Tara and Emerson's close friend, has held things back from them for years. The friendship between Tara and Emerson, as well as between their daughters Grace and Jenny, is thoroughly put to the test. It's an intriguing puzzle that is slowly unraveled.

Chamberlain packs in a lot of emotion the whole way through and finishes with a great ending. The narration alternates throughout the book with the main first'person voices being Tara and Emerson, but we hear a fair bit from others too, plus some revealing third-person insights into the past with flashbacks about Noelle which are interspersed at various stages of the novel. I would recommend this read if you have enjoyed any of Diane Chamberlain's other novels, or equally if you have never tried her before. A very satisfying page-turner.
